Interview With Dollar Queen

Hello readers!

I recently sat down over the internet for an interview with Bruges own DollarQueen. We talked about things ranging from their influences to their hometown.

DJ Spencer: What first drew me into your band was the name. How did you come up with it and what does it mean to you?

Dollar Queen: Filip came up with the name & everyone thought it sounded good. Red Light’s was included as bonus track on the 1st album..

DJ Spencer: So, what your saying is the band was built on the first ever song you wrote, Red Lights: What’s that song about?

Dollar Queen: One of the first songs yes, a song about the streets of joy, night life & smoking cigars…

DJ Spencer: Wow, Belgium sounds like a blast! How does your home town influence your sound?

Dollar Queen: I don’t think it influences our sound, apart from the Bruges/English accent maybe…

Dollar Queen: What does the Bruges/English accent sound like cause judging from songs like Plastic Girl, your vocals are like The Smiths..Would you agree?

Dollar Queen: Would you agree? Don’t know, we let the listener decide…

Dollar Queen: I don’t think it influences our sound, apart from the Bruges/English accent maybe…The Smiths, thx for another cool comparison ! Good example of our local/English accent would be…http://youtu.be/3N0shIQbz3s

DJ Spencer: No problem. Thanks for teaching me about your local accent.

DJ Spencer: Letting the listener decide makes sense, Its often fun for the fan if the artist/band keeps them guessing.

Dollar Queen: Indeed, same goes for lyrics … that’s the power of music, there are no limits

DJ Spencer: How do you come with lyrics?

Dollar Queen: Movies, events, experiences or just out of the blue, heh

DJ Spencer: Basically whatever strikes you at that moment. It sounds like you live in the now.

Dollar Queen: Yep..

DJ Spencer I’m really interested to know, what’s the story behind “Plastic Girl”?

Dollar Queen: I think the lyrics pretty much speak for themselves, use your imagination

DJ Spencer: So what your saying is you want a Direct-To-Fan Relationship with your fans, right?

Dollar Queen: Did I say that? But yeah, the interwebs has tons of possibility’s, right!

DJ Spencer: If you had to collaborate with someone (Alive or Dead) Who would be and why?

Dollar Queen: If you had to collaborate with someone? That would be producer Daniel Lanois ! Why? Gotta love his work man..

DJ Spencer: Yeah I agree Daniel Lanois has done some great work! How do you prepare for the studio?

Dollar Queen: Rehearse a lot and write new songs all year round, record everything & refine until everyone’s happy…

DJ Spencer: Further proof that you have a Direct-To-Fan Relationship..How do you prepare for a show, Do you have any preshow rituals. What would it be and why?

Dollar Queen: “How do you prepare for a show, Do you have any preshow rituals?” Apart from the planning, rehearse, ha!

DJ Spencer: Preparing is half the battle I guess..If you had one thing to all the people who said you couldn’t make it as a band..

Dollar Queen: First off, why assume we’ve been told that? 2nd. Making music & performing is what we do, like it or not ..that’s fine..

DJ Spencer: I didn’t mean to assume that you were told that..It just was supposed to be an hypothetical question.

Dollar Queen: No problem Spencer, it didn’t happen so dunno (but probably **** ***) haha!

DJ Spencer: I have total respect for you guys, What are your goals over the next couple of years?

Dollar Queen: Perform lots of shows/tour, expand our crew, shoot some cool videos, record/release our 3rd album & do it all over again!

Dollar Queen: Oh, and create some cool n’ sexy merchandise to cover some of the tour expenses…

DJ Spencer: Sounds like you’ve got some awesome goals for the band to work towards. Good luck in the future!

Hey guys DjSpencer here Back for Part 2 of my exclusive interview with Broken Fences.

1. Q: Could you describe music?

A: Wow that’s quite a question. Music is like magic, only it’s real. It’s beauty and pain and everything in between.

2. Q: Great answer, If you had one thing to say to all the people who said you couldn’t make it as a band, what would it be?

A: we have nothing to say to them. They don’t get us, and that’s fine. We have fans who do, and they’re the ones we care about.

3. Q: That makes sense. What’s the story behind “Wait”?

A: it’s the first song we ever did together. It made us decide to become a band.

1. Q: Oh cool, how long ago was that? How does your hometown influence your sound?

A: that was late fall, 2010. We have something in Pittsburgh called AcoustiCafe, It goes beyond an open mic; it’s a community

2. Q: It sounds like a tight community that every artist should be apart of. Where do you see yourselves in 2yrs?

A: hopefully a fan base similar to the one we have, but larger; and the ability to play music full time without day jobs.

1. I sat down with Broken Fences; over text-conference and got a behind the scenes look at this Pittsburgh up and coming band. Check out Part One of this exclusive interview.

Q: Q. I love your sound, very fresh but what really got me was your name, Where does it come from, What does it mean to you?

A: thanks! Our backgrounds couldn’t be more disparate, but we are completely at home making music together. Hence Broken Fences

2. Q: interesting. What do you mean by disparate? What are your musical influences?

A: I grew up classical; Morgan grew up punk (I’m Guy). We met in the middle with Hendrix, Joplin, Beatles…60s rock and folk

3. Q: Your influences are your influences but I have to ask, why classical? How do come up with Lyrics?

A: my dad is a classical musician so I grew up with it. But I’ve always just written what I felt; lyrics and music.

4. Q: That makes sense; parents are always a strong influence. If you each had to collaborate with someone, who would it be?

A: Morgan: Thom Yorke (alive), Kurt Cobain (dead); Guy: Robin Pecknold (alive), Nick Drake (dead)

5. Q: I definitely hear snippets of Tom Yorke and Nirvana. How do you prepare for a show?

A: Normally we do very little preparation (set list in the car on the way) but we’re working to change that.

Q: How do you prepare for a show?

A: Nothing. I’m not one for routine.

Q: If you had to collaborate with someone (Alive or dead) who would it be?

A: Richard Pryor.

Q: Interesting answer. Are you talking about Richard Pryor the stand up comic?

A: Of course!

Q: Everybody has his or her influences, and I respect that but how does a drummer like you connect with a Comedian?

A: Id love to spend time and attempt to create with him. Jamming with the greats doesn’t float my boat.

Q: If you one thing to say to all the people who said you couldn’t make it as a drummer, what would it be?

A: It would have to be (excuse me), “Go fuck yourself!”

A Night With Kristen Karma

Mesmerising vocals, Powerful lyrics and a stellar stage presence; Kristen Karma is truly “Bustin Out!” The audience found Karma “Irresistible.” From the moment she stepped out on stage, we all knew we were in for a good show. Kristen stood in front of a neon pink microphone stand. To her left was her guitarist and behind her the drummer; who had exactly 24 hours to learn all the material. When she starts singing the audience seemed to get lost in her words. Words like “it’s exactly what you need,” put the crowd under a spell. Karma [does it her way] and insist that [she’s alright on her own], and we most certainly agree.

Her music is pop rock. In songs like ‘Bustin Out’ and ‘Something More’ the drums add to the songs liveliness. Her enthusiastic performance included jumping around on stage and engaging the crowd with every move. Karma knows how to connect with her audience by writing about topics that can really hit home. Songs like “Goodbye” which pays tribute to her Grandfather, left the crowd silent as we reflected on our own losses.

She plays as if it’s her last time she’s ever going to be playing. With out even trying she gives everything she’s got; leaves her blood sweat and tears on the stage. She turns pop punk songs into hits without being the next Britney Spears.

No matter if she’s rocking out in front of a neon microphone or sitting behind the piano Karma always seems to stay entertaining. She gave a lasting impression that will forever be a memory I will always cherish.
